High Alert Trend Report: G-Type Substances

Over the past six months, there has been a noticeable increase in the use of G-type substances (GBL, GHB, 1,4-BD) in New Zealand. Reports show higher doses and more frequent use, leading to increased harm and withdrawal symptoms. This trend raises concern due to the risk of accidental overdose and unintended exposure, especially among children. Health and harm reduction professionals are encouraged to review and share relevant harm reduction advice.

This trend report is marked as ‘In Confidence’. It is produced exclusively for our professional partners and may contain sensitive information. Please do not share this report publicly or outside your professional network.

Professionals involved in drug testing are reminded that laboratory testing for “other drugs” following reasonable cause, critical incidents, or accidents is good practice to help identify potential drug influence.
